With Gurgaon showing the way, by registering a growth of over 200 per cent in a decade, urban population in Haryana has registered a growth of 27,06,284 persons and the state has also improved its skewed sex ratio.
The urban population of Haryana has increased from 61,15,304 in 2001 to 88,21,588 in 2011, registering an increase of 27,06,284 persons, with Gurgaon registering the highest growth.
While releasing provisional rural-urban distribution figures of population of Haryana of Census 2011 for all the districts, Neerja Sekhar, Director, Census Operation, Haryana said today that the share of urban population increased to 34.79 per cent as compared to 28.92 per cent in 2001.
Gurgaon, which has witnessed fast urbanisation during the past decade, has registered the highest urban population growth at 236.45 per cent followed by Mewat at 109.13 per cent and Rewari at 69.94 per cent.
In 2001, Gurgaon's population was over 1.56 lakh which is now over 10.42 lakh.
The lowest urban growth was reported from Sirsa at 9.21 per cent followed by Bhiwani at 19.30 per cent and Yamunanagar at 20.30 per cent.
The Rural population of Haryana is now 65.21 per cent, she said. Total population of the state, according to the latest Census, is over 2.53 crore.
"The sex ratio of both the rural and urban population has also recorded an increase. Overall sex ratio of Haryana has improved from 861 in 2001 to 877 in 2011. The sex ratio of rural areas increased to 880 in 2011 from 866 of 2001 Census.
In urban areas sex ratio has been reported as 871 in 2011 as compared to 847 of 2001, a net gain of 24 females per 1000 males," she said.
Sekhar said that the overall sex ratio of child population in the age group 0-6 has increased to 830 in 2011 from 819 in 2001.
"In rural areas, sex ratio of child population registered a growth of 831 in 2011 from 823 of 2001. In urban areas, it increased from 808 to 829," she said.
Sekhar pointed out that literacy rate of Haryana has increased from 67.91 per cent to 76.64 per cent in 2011.
In rural areas, it increased to 72.74 per cent from 63.19 per cent while in urban areas, literacy rate increased from 79.16 per cent to 83.83 per cent.
